Chapter Four
I wake up the next morning groggy and cranky. It was after midnight when I finally crawled in to bed, managing to avoid Lexi's questions mostly because she was too drunk to notice my wild, distressed self. And then a full night of tossing and turning, of waking up and not being able to get back to sleep. Gavin Rowley is occupying a corner of my mind like an invading force and he refuses to leave, refuses to let me sleep, refuses to give me a moment of peace. It's exhausting.
I have never once skipped a day of school, but I come close to turning the alarm off and staying right there in bed. What finally gets me up is realizing that even if I do stay in bed, I wont be getting any sleep. I would just toss and turn more, trying to get my brain to be quiet long enough to close my eyes for a couple minutes.
So finally I get up, make myself a quick breakfast and hurry out to the bus in the predawn light, dressed in my comfortable sweats and determined to look as unappealing as possible, should any more guest speakers decide to show up today. I promise myself that I wont, but I cant help looking around for any sign of Gavin on my way out. He's leaving today, this might be my last chance to get a glimpse of him, but as usual it's just me at this painfully early hour of the day. At least Gavin will be gone by the time I get home from school.
I struggle to keep my eyes open through my classes, and work is just as miserable. As much as I enjoy the different aspects of working at the library -- it is after all the thing that I want to do for the rest of my life -- my mind keeps drifting back to Gavin and his job offer. What if it was a sincere offer? What else might he have sitting around in that private library of his besides signed copies of Ulysses and Alice in Wonderland? What treasures might I get to reverently touch? It hasn't been twenty-four hours and I'm already second guessing my choice to let him leave my life without saying something.
I guess my torment is evident, because my boss, Frank, gives me the rest of the night off at eight, and after protesting without much gusto that I can tough it out, I go home. Lexi is there, primping and getting ready to go out dancing. She immediately insists that I come with her, but when she gets a good look at me she seems to change her tune.
"Oh sweetie," Lexi says, "you look like crap. Are you feeling okay?"
"No sleep," I mumble as I collapse face first on the couch.
Lexi sits down beside me and rubs my shoulder. "Why cant you sleep? Do you want me to get you some sleeping pills? I met this hot doctor the other night and he would totally hook me up.
